Love in Transition

An intimate work in progress by Grace Rivera.

When her friend Leigh began transitioning, photographer and director Grace Rivera watched with admiration as the love between Leigh and their partner, Kerry, deepened. She began making portraits of the couple, an exploration that the three of them have now agreed to continue for a year. The project, which will encompass photography, audio, and video, will plumb what she calls “the fluctuating nature of identity and the resilience of true, selfless love amid significant personal transformation.” Here, Grace shares a preview of her intimate work in progress.

Every step of the way, I’ve always had you. Seeing me exactly as I am and loving me exactly as I am—quite honestly, even before I learned to love my self.
— Leigh

More than anything, I see the person who I love so much coming into their fullest self and learning to love themselves exactly as they should. It’s been the greatest privilege to hold your hand and be there with you through this process.
— Kerry
