Collages and words by Marcus Smith
The 2024 Summer Olympics set something off inside me.
I’m a sports photographer who’s shot so many of the GOATs—Brady, Curry, James, Bryant, McLaughlin-Levrone—but let’s just say it’s a dream of mine to document the Games. As I watched the Olympics broadcast from my home in Chicago, I wished I could be in Paris with my camera, and that got me thinking…
What does it really mean to capture an event? For me, it’s always about archiving the moment and presenting a perspective. But it occurred to me that thanks to technology—TVs, computers, mobile devices—people can form their own perspective from what they see on the screen. That’s what this series of collages embraces and represents.
Performance art is defined as “a type of art that involves the artist or other participants performing actions in front of an audience. The actions can be spontaneous or scripted, and the artist often uses their body as their canvas and paint”—the perfect way to describe what these athletes do on the world’s stage.
